Place, Participation and Parsifal: Classical Music in the Highlands
What should the future of classical music in the Highlands look like?

What opportunities should exist for young people who want to become professional musicians?

And what role should culture play as Inverness pursues UK City of Culture 2029?

These are the questions at the heart of Place, Participation and Parsifal: Classical Music in the Highlands, a special public discussion and performance event presented by The Mahler Players on Thursday 28 May at Eden Court.

Set alongside the orchestra’s rare semi-staged performances of Wagner’s Parsifal in Inverness Cathedral on 27 and 31 May, the event is designed not simply as a panel discussion, but as an open conversation with the public about the realities, pressures and possibilities facing classical music in rural Scotland today.

The evening will encourage discussion about the future of classical music in the Highlands and the opportunities available to young people seeking careers in the arts.

The evening will also feature performances from members of The Mahler Players and guest artists including Sir John Tomlinson, Joe Scott, Tam Darlugdach, Susie Summers and the Dava Ensemble.
