The List

Shacklewell Arms

The back room of the Shacklewell Arms is the place to be for gigs, club nights, magazine launches and other events, seven days a week. Music-wise, expect unknowns to mingle with up-and-comers, for reasonable prices (often free; usually less than a tenner). Generally veering on the indie side, although Solange Knowles has manned the decks in the past. The front room is a pub, with a big screen for football, a pool table and a wide range of ales and lagers to satisfy most tastes. Burgers are the meal of choice -- the pub are working their way through 50 different burgers to represent all 50 states of America, so that's plenty of choice. There are also veggie options, hot dogs and sides. Bus numbers 488, 236, 149, 76 all stop nearby, while Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction tube stations are about five minutes walk away.

Pit Pony

Pit Pony

18 Oct 2025 - 29 Oct 2025

Fiercely honest, Jackies lyricism portrays an intense duality and a vulnerability that is instantly relatable. Turning inwards to explore notions of motherhood, imposter syndrome and getting older, while simultaneously outwards through commentary on the cost of living, polluted water, the constant sell on social media and the off menu Starbucks coffee obsession. With the band citing the recent influences of Blue Weekend and Skinty Fia alongside the likes of Can and the soundtracks of Ennio Moriconne, mastering engineer Christian Wright (Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C., Pigs x7) proves the perfect fit with Chris McManus (Blank Studios) heading up recording & production. Sonically, Pit Pony remain loyal to their roots, noting the influence of regional titans Nadine Shah and The Futureheads and with the ENGLISH ACCENT god damn it reminder on PJ Harveys Uh Huh Her in mind, Jackie Purver stays true to her accent. Dead Stars sees Pit Pony deliver an expanded but yet more balanced and personal conception of their craft. Garth Purver explains that the band were aiming for a more rounded and complete record that showcased multiple sides to us but hung together as one piece of work rather than a collection of separate tracks. While Andrew Jones mentions how the band encouraged each other to pull on those strands and incorporate more of our personal taste in the sound.

"Set aside some time to sit back and let Magic Shoppe whisk you away. Who knows, you might not want to come back." - DKFM Magic Shoppe are known for their love of distortion and reverb. Taking notes from My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Raveonettes, Sonic Youth and Loop, the band has a shoegaze sound that flirts with noise rock. Dark, fuzzed-out guitars can wash into soundscapes or crash into a sonic maelström. They balance retro and futuristic music with driving bass and dirty rhythms, mixed with dark vocal melodies. Magic Shoppe have offered up their own wall of sound blend of raw Shoegaze across 6 LPs, 6 EPs and 1 Live LP over the past 13 years. The band recently hit 3.5 million streams for their top Spotify songs, as well as having 105,000 Spotify monthly listeners. Chime School + Autocamper

Chime School + Autocamper

21 Jul 2025 - 21 Jul 2025

Chime School: Marrying the pristine jangle of electric 12-string guitars with nervy, hooky songs, Chime School conjures a unique and instantly recognizable form of indie pop, rooted in the buoyant, driving pulse of their 1980’s and 90’s forebearers, while still locked in a kaleidoscopic stare with the genre’s 1960’s originators. Autocamper: Manchester’s Autocamper are the perfect pop antidote to the city’s predictable post-punk machismo. Like a Northern kitchen sink rendering of The Vaselines’ call and response motif, vocal duties are shared by Jack Harkins and Niamh Purtill-their world-weary reflections on bedroom tiffs and hungover misdemeanors capture the jangle pop spirit of the ‘80s without the C86 revisionism. Ruth Lyon

Ruth Lyon

9 Oct 2025 - 23 Oct 2025

Newcastle folk/chamber pop artist Ruth Lyon found herself feeling like crap every time Vogue magazine dropped onto her front door mat, yet still she didn’t cancel her subscription. Even as the pages prodded at insecurities there was something strangely addictive about mindlessly flipping through it every month. The situation inspired the title of her second EP, Direct Debit To Vogue (2022), produced by John Parish, who has notably worked with PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding and This Is The Kit. The songs explore self-doubt, insecurity, emotional masochism, the weight of arbitrary expectations. All of this is un-ravelled through offbeat, sophisticated chamber pop and anti-folk, commanded by Lyon’s soulful vocals and witty yet raw lyricism. Over the years, she’s established herself as a key and active member of the Newcastle music scene, including in her role on the board of directors at Sage Gateshead and as lead singer of cult folk rockers Holy Moly & The Crackers. She has also advocated for the Disabled community in her work as an ambassador for Attitude Is Everything, a charity that aims to improve accessibility for Deaf and Disabled people in live music; Lyon herself has been a wheelchair user since the age of 21. The key themes that Lyon found were at the core of all these songs were power in fragility, and beauty in imperfection. This turns on its head all the societal assumptions represented by those Vogue magazines and opens up doors to a new kind of self-acceptance and power. “I want it to be very inclusive, like anybody could listen to any of the songs and come up with their own story, or it would mirror their individual circumstances,” she says. “I wanted to evoke the feeling of the kinda music that just punches you in the gut. Rather than ‘oh, this is pretty, this is nice’ — I want to emotionally drag some stuff out of people.” She concludes Direct Debit to Vogue’s journey with four simple words: “I’ve found my voice.”
Plastic Factory's 2'nd Bday

Plastic Factory's 2'nd Bday

17 Jul 2025 - 20 Aug 2025

Plastic Factory turns 2! To celebrate, we’ll be joined by friends old and new in the form of Egyptian Blue, Slow Fiction & The Itch PLUS a special DJ set from Mercury Award winning legends, English Teacher. Slow Fiction Forming out of a tapestry of hometown friendships and college connections, Slow Fiction emerged into a music scene fragmented by lockdowns. They grew closer as restrictions dropped away and audiences grew, using the shifts to experiment with their material and reach more expansive and formidable levels. The final product is a landmine of sound, inspired by the raw, sweeping fuzz of the likes of Sonic Youth and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Familiar elements of noughties era guitar shine through, confronted with cutting contemporary angst to create a nostalgic yet intoxicating sound. The Itch Having first appeared on the capital’s live circuit at the tail-end of 2023, The Itch’s pairing of undulating dancefloor fillers and disenchanted pop songwriting saw them quickly become a name that was passed between gig goers despite a notable absence from social media, as word-of-mouth spread about an act channeling the stadium rock sensibilities of REM through a modern dance filter. Presented by AEG. This is an 18+ event.
Bbbbbbb

Bbbbbbb

8 Oct 2025 - 8 Oct 2025

Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: Bbbbbbb Shunning the typical confrontational or stone-faced noisenik stance, this trio of troublemakers from Aichi Prefecture, Japan, approaches noise with a uniquely skewed sense of humor - one that never slips into mere parody or carelessness. Formed by Ryuseigun Saionji, who spent years envisioning a career in stand-up comedy, and rounded out by G.R.D.V. and Marao, BBBBBBB inject their colorful, digital hardcore-noise with a kind of twisted wit that might even recall the absurdist spirit of Yamataka Eye’s work with Boredoms. Their 2023 release “SHINPI” is described by the group as ‘Japanese Progressive Deconstructed Scum New Age’ - and with its brief bursts of gabber-influenced high-speed rhythms, kaleidoscopic arpeggios, distorted vocals, and theatrical flair drawn from Japan’s micro-scum movement, the label feels surprisingly fitting. Slater, an experimental alternative electronic and indie hip-hop artist from Orange County, California, has become a star of the new wave of alternative pop/hip-hop since his debut in 2013. Drawing inspiration from the laid-back, sunburnt vibe of his hometown and the raw energy of '90s and early 2000s rap and rock, Slater has crafted a sound that is both distinctly SoCal and refreshingly boundary-pushing. From seductive club bangers to therapeutic night-time cruising tunes, his music captivates listeners with smooth, groovy beats and infectious melodies that feel as nostalgic as they are innovative.

Daiistar

Daiistar

15 Oct 2025 - 7 Nov 2025

Daiistar is a Noise-Pop/Alt-Indie band formed in Austin, Texas in the spring of 2020. The band takes their inspiration from the neo-psychedelic era of the 80s and 90s and pulls it into the future with modulating synthesizers, heavy guitars, bouncing bass lines, and spiraling hooks, creating a narcotic blend of noise and melody.
Nothingheads + Citizen Above Suspicion
London-based Nothingheads deal in chaotic, noisy garage punk-static bursts, snarling vocals, and colossal riffs tearing through the dirge, gorging on a mess of influences. Their debut EP Sunlit Uplands (2023) was championed by BBC 6 Music, Radio X, and Louder Than War. That set the stage for their first full-length, The Art of Sod (Sister9 Recordings, Nov 2024)-an intense, captivating aural assault that leaves you battered, wired, and grinning. Themes of voyeurism, menial domesticity, Amazonian goldmines, and impossible desires are dragged into the light, spat out, and disembowelled in noise. The release was followed by headline UK and EU tours, and a live show that’s only grown more feral and unrelenting. 'A riffier, less brittle version of Public Image Limited', Steve Lamacq BBC6 music. Driven by squalling, destroyed noise strafing over repetitive krautrock grooves, Citizen Above Suspicion is an assault on the senses. Strobing visuals and unrelenting fuzz are punctuated by blasts of dub delay-soaked, vitriolic vocals - essential to their goals of entrancing audiences. Presented by CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH.. Kling Klang

Kling Klang

29 Nov 2025 - 29 Nov 2025

Baba Yaga's Hut Presents: Kling Klang Free entrance - The Shacklewell Arms - 29th November 2025 KLING KLANG are a no-nonsense heavy experimental music group performing with vintage synths, drums and attitude. Influenced by krautrock / noise / stoner music such as Neu!, Trans Am, Chrome and Black Sabbath. The band are currently touring in support of their upcoming release on Wrong Speed Records, and the repress of their critically acclaimed debut LP “The Esthetik Of Destruction”. The current lineup features Joe McLaughlin and Jon Hamilton from Part Chimp alongside George McFall and Ricky White. “Synth-Propelled drone-rock genius. Rocking like a Mangabot Sabbath...Kling Klang take art-rock and drive an incessantly malevolent wedge through it. They’ve got mesmerizing groove and dark n’ discordant experimentation over convulsing punk rock riffs down to a fine art” Kerrang “Kling Klang echo the heavier edges of Kosmische Musik, especially the transcendent recursive simplicity of Neu!, the ‘three Rs’ of Mark E. Smith and the DIY inventions of Joe Meek, the robotic filth of Suicide’s ‘Ghost Rider’, the drones and distortions of Cale-era Velvets, the Grand Guignol of Goblin, but also the romantic minimalism you find in the rich seam of working class northern English synth music. Somehow Kling Klang take all these elements, and compress them with immense pressure into a kind of neutron star perfection, from which only two-note keyboard solos can escape. In other words, Kling Klang are fun.” The Quietus “If you still feel a nervy rush of excitement from the intergalactic grooves of Hawkwind's ‘Silver Machine’ as they kick into warp drive, then you must go and see this band”. Freq Magazine “Like Goblin doing the soundtrack to Day of The Dead on heavy duty synths and guitars that drone like Electric Wizard” Vice “A group sharing the same name as Kraftwerk's Dusseldorf studio? I had to check them out. Pounding Krautrock inspired Motorik beat, like Neu! welded to incessant Phillip Glass keyboard riffs” Andy Mcluskey, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark “Kling Klang’s Heavydale blew me away then and still does now. They are so awesome live.” Adrian Utley, Portishead Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. This is an 18+ event

Public Circuit

17 Oct 2025 - 17 Oct 2025

If electronic music is sacred theology, New York City band Public Circuit are the pagan heretics driving the genre forward with an indomitable will to live. After joining forces in early 2023, Ethan Biamont, Sean Holloway and Nelson Fisher will release their second album Modern Church on September 12 via à La Carte Records. On Modern Church, NYC trio Public Circuit dismantle and reassemble post-punk with surgical precision. Gone is any pretense of retro revivalism-what remains is something sharper, darker and entirely their own. With a newfound sense of collaboration amongst all three members, this is a record that dances in the flicker of candlelight and fluorescent glare alike, channeling an austere pulse of angular electronic instrumentation, and raw percussive rhythms all bathed with the high- gloss ache of sophist-ipop into a sound that’s equal parts ritual and revolution. Following the release of their debut album in 2024, the band took Lamb to the road with sold-out shows across 30 states including festival performances at New Colossus, Hopscotch and MACROCK. They’ll continue to spread their gospel this coming Fall in both the US and Europe. Presented by Club The Mammoth. This is an 18+ event.

This month we bring Sex Week, Tommy Barlow + Most Things to the Shacklewell Arms. Sub:terra; existing, situated, or operating below the surface of the earth; underground. Sex Week Dreamy and sicko at the same time... Pearl Amanda Dickson and Richard Orofino drag their lovingly crafted indie rock songs through the dirt. Sex Week make dream-pop that, somehow, sounds scrubbed of all its distortion. For fans of Wolf Alice, Liz Phair + David Lynch. Tommy Barlow Tommy Barlow grew up on a steady diet of traditional folk before moving to London’s prestigious Guildhall School - his music uses field recordings, guitars, strings, samples, the occasional bagpipe along with his distinctly unique voice. For fans of Steve Reich, Mount Kimbie + James Blake. Most Things Most Things are a two piece band from London with a strange, sincere gravity - a bit like Richard Dawson channelling 90s skramz. For fans of Minutemen + Television Personalities. Presented by AEG. This is an 18+ event
