The List

Shacklewell Arms

The back room of the Shacklewell Arms is the place to be for gigs, club nights, magazine launches and other events, seven days a week. Music-wise, expect unknowns to mingle with up-and-comers, for reasonable prices (often free; usually less than a tenner). Generally veering on the indie side, although Solange Knowles has manned the decks in the past. The front room is a pub, with a big screen for football, a pool table and a wide range of ales and lagers to satisfy most tastes. Burgers are the meal of choice -- the pub are working their way through 50 different burgers to represent all 50 states of America, so that's plenty of choice. There are also veggie options, hot dogs and sides. Bus numbers 488, 236, 149, 76 all stop nearby, while Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction tube stations are about five minutes walk away.

Tony Jay (san Francisco, Slumberland Records) + The Gabys - Free Entry Show
Baba Yaga's Hut Presnts: Tony Jay + The Gabys & DJ Naima Lite - Free Entry Show at The Shacklewell Arms Tony Jay began as a recording project in 2006 and became a live band in 2017, drawing inspiration from failed relationships, lack of sleep, urban blight, a bicycle injury, feline mortality - the list goes on - pairing catchy melodies and hushed vocals with ethereal instrumental tracks. Over the years, the albums have been released by Slumberland, Mt.St.Mtn., Paisley Shirt Records, Galaxy Train, and KiliKiliVilla which cement Tony Jay's status as dejected crooner of the quotidian par excellence. "Michael Ramos has been a fixture of San Francisco’s vibrant indie pop scene, cropping up in Flowertown, Cindy, Sad Eyed Beatniks, and early versions of April Magazine all while maintaining his mysterious persona as Tony Jay." - Raven Sings The Blues. \ The Gabys are a duo made up of Matt Wilkinson and Natasha Bikkul. They write mysterious, eerie bedroom pop from their home in Liverpool. This is Velvet Underground-inspired electric folk music that can roll with 90s New Zealand greats like Dadamah and The Garbage & The Flowers but also has parallels with current San Francisco lo-fi pop moodists like April Magazine and Mister Baby. They have released music with All Gone, Fruits and Flowers, and most recently, A Colourful Storm. Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. This is an 18+ event

Brides

22 Jun 2026 - 22 Jun 2026

Brides have been haunting London with their Southern Gothic tales of murder, revenge and faith gone awry for the past few years. However, after the departure of their lead guitarist to Mexico, and their singer relocating to The Fatal Shore (Australia) this summer, the band are calling it a day on this version of the project. Summoning you all to a final memento mori as the band celebrate the release of an EP ‘White Dress’ and lure us into the bayou once last time. They will not be celebrating this alone, bringing with them two glorious acts to warm everyones blood Born Again Virgin is an alternative rock project by the London-based artist Anna Roenigk. Originally from Austin, Texas, Born Again Virgin combines the dissonance of 90s lo-fi grunge with the melodies and theatrics of chamber pop into music that ranges from excitingly heavy to soothingly mellow. Just Kids is an indie rock project driven by the London-based artist Rachel Still. Influenced by the likes of Springsteen, Pixies, Fugazi, Nine Inch Nails, and Patti Smith among many others, they have crafted their own distinct style of introspective art rock infused with the gentle ache of nostalgia, featuring jangly guitars and vocals that could move mountains. Carson McHone

Carson McHone

25 Aug 2026 - 4 Sept 2026

Carson McHone is a songwriter from Austin, Texas, now residing in Southern Ontario. McHone’s 2018 internationally released Carousel (LOOSE MUSIC / NINE MILE RECORDS), produced by Mike McCarthy, was a reimagining of songs from her formative years coming of age playing in dive bars. It established her as a shrewd artist who raises unconventional questions with language equally at home in a poem or a short story. In 2019, during a hectic tour schedule, the songs of Still Life were written, and the following year McHone teamed up with Canadian musician and producer, Daniel Romano, to record the album while sequestered at a home studio in the fall of 2020. Still Life was released on MERGE RECORDS / LOOSE MUSIC in February 2022 with McHone touring the US, Canada, Europe, and the UK in support of the album, as well as joining, and performing with, Daniel Romano’s band, the Outfit. In September 2022 McHone released Camera Varda Variations (MERGE RECORDS/ LOOSE MUSIC), a digital EP featuring two songs from Still Life re-recorded at the Outfit’s new studio, Camera Varda, with the group as her band, akin to the collaboration/live show of the two acts on tour.

Villagerrr + Spanish Horses

Villagerrr + Spanish Horses

28 Jun 2026 - 28 Jun 2026

Villagerrr Carousel, Mark Scott’s fifth album as villagerrr, glides from slowcore to shoegaze, from log-cabin folk to the accelerated bliss of rock tailor-made for an empty freeway. The boldest and most delicate album to date from the Ohio songwriter, Carousel is a sweeping exploration of what it means to try to make sincere art in a hyperexposed and constricting age, where Scott’s big, midwestern songs smolder with a desire to find enduring meaning in an era rife with commodification. Piecing the music together over the course of two years, Scott let the collaborative spirit of his previous record flourish. 2024’s Tear Your Heart Out, sparked tours with Real Estate, Greg Freeman and Momma, a new label deal with Winspear and recent deluxe reissue, bringing in widening circles of listeners and collaborators. Carousel features a melange of Scott’s rising folk and indie rock peers, like Boone Patrello of Teethe, h. pruz and Carolina Chauffe of Hemlock, and was mixed by Scott after listening back to rough drafts on long drives or on runs. With Scott’s keen ear for both particulate detail and expansive landscape, listening to villagerrr can feel like peering into prairie grass to see what's crawling there, then standing up suddenly to witness the splendor of an oncoming storm. Carousel harbors a lot of healthy skepticism about the world we're in now, but it also holds up proof that just laying down your guard and reaching out to other people can spark creatively bountiful relationships-and set the foundation for a life that's deeply, meaningfully livable. Spanish Horses Spanish Horses is a five-piece underground rock band from London. After forming in Paris in 2023, they built a strong local following through frequent shows and the EP As She Rides By, which marked a turning point for the group. Following a high-profile run supporting Public Image Ltd. and a standout appearance at Tramlines Festival, the band has spent the last year solidifying their reputation as a must-see live act. The group recently reached a new milestone, returning from their debut UK headline tour where they brought their raw energy to venues across the country, from Brighton all the way up to Glasgow. Refusing to slow down, Spanish Horses are maintaining a relentless pace by dropping new singles every few months, ensuring a constant stream of output for their growing community. Committed to forging genuine connections with their audience, the band continues to write fresh and sincere music with the aim of making a lasting impact internationally.
