The List

Shacklewell Arms

The back room of the Shacklewell Arms is the place to be for gigs, club nights, magazine launches and other events, seven days a week. Music-wise, expect unknowns to mingle with up-and-comers, for reasonable prices (often free; usually less than a tenner). Generally veering on the indie side, although Solange Knowles has manned the decks in the past. The front room is a pub, with a big screen for football, a pool table and a wide range of ales and lagers to satisfy most tastes. Burgers are the meal of choice -- the pub are working their way through 50 different burgers to represent all 50 states of America, so that's plenty of choice. There are also veggie options, hot dogs and sides. Bus numbers 488, 236, 149, 76 all stop nearby, while Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction tube stations are about five minutes walk away.

Beefheart and McQuinn

Beefheart & McQuinn is the new project from UK artist Moby Beefheart aka William Murray (formerly of UK outfit Fur) and Melbourne / Naarm musician Winter McQuinn (Sunfruits, jade imagine). Coming together after a chanced coffee meetup, the musical connection between the two artists is palpable. Sharing a love for the folk and rock sounds of yesteryear without pastiche obsession, Beefheart & McQuinn make contemporary psychedelic folk / soft rock, a rich sonic tapestry of vocal harmony blends and deft musicianship / production. Their first offering ‘Hand In Hand’ is a song about the effect of a busy working life in a new place coupled with the feeling of isolation and anxiety that goes with that. Following the release of ‘Hand In Hand’ which was described as “perfectly emulating the kind of sun-soaked Canyon comedowns that ease the mind into Sunday mornings.”, the duo has supported acts including Leah Senior, Snowy and JB Patterson and are touring the UK in May 2026 with performances at Alt Escape in support of their debut album ‘Midtown Downtime’ out May 7 via Rainflower.

Skinner

Skinner

29 May 2026 - 6 Jun 2026

Skinner is Aaron Corcoran, based in Dublin, who writes, records and produces songs about growing up and overcoming a dirt-flecked 21st century existence. The DNA of no wave and post-punk acts like The B52s, James Chance and the Contortions and ESG through to alt-rock touchstones Pixies and Morphine com-bined with an talent for grunge-nodding self-production and pockets of elevated in-strumentation is oozing from Skinner’s music. Debut album New Wave Vaudeville, released January 2025 on Faction Records, references the New Wave Vaudeville music variety freak show that took place at the 57 Club in New York from 1978 to 1983. The club was known for its free-form art shows, a debaucherous wild riposte to creeping commerciality of modern culture of the time, an era that perfectly reflects the rambunctious nature Skinner has brought to this new collection. Gitkin

Gitkin

26 May 2026 - 28 May 2026

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. Reviews of Gitkin’s first two LP’s grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favourably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his follow up album, Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadened his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavours found in each savoury ingredient. This is an 18+ event .

23 May 2026 - 30 May 2026

Pop Mutations & Freakender present: screensave + Special Guests. Screensaver balance frenetic energy with unsettling tonalities to create rhythmic gloom that rides the new wave to the synth-punk.
Spending three years in an incubatory state, the band began as a trans Pacific collaboration between Christopher Stephenson (Spray Paint/Exek) and Krystal Maynard (Bad Vision/ex Polo) in 2016. By 2019 Christopher had long since relocated to Melbourne and the current line up now consists of James Beck (Personal Touch/ex Rat Columns) on drums, Dorian Vary (Soundtrack Music) on bass and Jonnine Nokes (Horse Pills) on second synth.
The band has released two full length albums: Expressions of Interest (2021) and Decent Shapes (2023). The latter came out as a split release on Poison City Records (AUS) and Upset the Rhythm (UK) and extended on the bands blend of synth driven post-punk replete with elements of krautrock, dance-punk, new wave and electronica established on their debut. The first single The Guilt found itself in the AMRAP Independent Music Charts top 10 during its first few weeks of release and received praise on Rolling Stone (AUS), Post Trash (USA), Raven Sings the Blues (USA) and PBS FM (AUS). The album has received excellent reviews on NME, KEXP, Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll and Brooklyn Vegan to name a few.

Tony Jay (san Francisco, Slumberland Records) + The Gabys - Free Entry Show
Baba Yaga's Hut Presnts: Tony Jay + The Gabys & DJ Naima Lite - Free Entry Show at The Shacklewell Arms Tony Jay began as a recording project in 2006 and became a live band in 2017, drawing inspiration from failed relationships, lack of sleep, urban blight, a bicycle injury, feline mortality - the list goes on - pairing catchy melodies and hushed vocals with ethereal instrumental tracks. Over the years, the albums have been released by Slumberland, Mt.St.Mtn., Paisley Shirt Records, Galaxy Train, and KiliKiliVilla which cement Tony Jay's status as dejected crooner of the quotidian par excellence. "Michael Ramos has been a fixture of San Francisco’s vibrant indie pop scene, cropping up in Flowertown, Cindy, Sad Eyed Beatniks, and early versions of April Magazine all while maintaining his mysterious persona as Tony Jay." - Raven Sings The Blues. \ The Gabys are a duo made up of Matt Wilkinson and Natasha Bikkul. They write mysterious, eerie bedroom pop from their home in Liverpool. This is Velvet Underground-inspired electric folk music that can roll with 90s New Zealand greats like Dadamah and The Garbage & The Flowers but also has parallels with current San Francisco lo-fi pop moodists like April Magazine and Mister Baby. They have released music with All Gone, Fruits and Flowers, and most recently, A Colourful Storm. Presented by Baba Yaga's Hut. This is an 18+ event

Pájaros Vampiro

Pájaros Vampiro

2 Jun 2026 - 2 Jun 2026

Pájaros Vampiro is a Mexican alternative rock band driven by a DIY ethos, set to perform at Primavera Sound 2026, further solidifying their growing presence within the global independent circuit. In 2025, they released their debut album SE HACE ASÍ, touring more than 26 states across Mexico in support of the record. Throughout their career, they have opened for The Drums and shared stages with Boom Boom Kid, Carolina Durante, and Bestia Bebé, strengthening their footprint within the Ibero-American scene. In 2024, they were featured on the soundtrack of the Netflix film La Gran Seducción. In 2026, the band will embark on a tour across the United Kingdom, France, and Spain, reaffirming both their rapid growth and their commitment to the live experience. Pájaros Vampiro began when Hugo and Abraham, just 17 years old at the time, started making music between skate sessions and rounds of Rock Band. Shortly after, Edi joined on guitar to record Miedo y Deseo, their first EP, tracked in a home studio. The release was raw, urgent punk - songs about growing up in the largest city in the world and feeling angry without fully knowing why. That early material allowed them to tour independently and share stages with the Mexican punk bands they once admired. Their second EP, Buscando Rebeldía, produced by Toño Montes (Los Románticos de Zacatecas), marked a turning point: shifting from accidental lo-fi to a deliberate sonic identity. From there, Pájaros Vampiro evolved beyond being seen as teenage punks and began drawing attention from specialized media, establishing themselves as one of the most compelling emerging acts of their generation. Now with a sharper sound and an increasingly defined identity, Pájaros Vampiro shows no signs of slowing down. 2026 finds them expanding, touring relentlessly, and taking SE HACE ASÍ to new territories. This isn’t a future promise - it’s a band fully in motion. Presented by Bad Vibrations 18+ only (photo ID required)

Joe’s singing, his words slurred and distorted in the time-honoured tradition of delta bluesmen, melds to Jazz’s wordless vocals, high and keening like some punk banshee princess, equal parts Grace Slick and Yoko Ono.
