Super Smash Burton Brothers comedy review: Unpretentious fun

Car crash? No. Burton Brothers smash? Yes: and this time they’re bringing their mates along for the chaotic, high-energy ride. Super Smash Burton Brothers is exactly what the title promises: big stunts, bigger laughs, and a barely controlled sense of delightful mayhem in this improvised comedy battle featuring a changing roster of special guests.

The sibling duo’s signature physical comedy is still front and centre but the added cast injects fresh momentum, turning the show into something that feels looser, louder, and even more unpredictable. Not every gag lands perfectly, but the hit rate is impressively high, and the audience response is immediate and infectious.

What really sells Super Smash is the chemistry. There’s genuine joy in the performers’ timing, trust, and willingness to push the ridiculous right to the edge. It’s fast, funny, and gloriously unpretentious Fringe entertainment that knows exactly what it is doing. There is plenty of smash and more than enough sparkle to keep crowds grinning long after the final stunt lands safely in the chaos. If you’re chasing polished perfection, look elsewhere, but if you want joyful, slightly unhinged fun, the Burton Brothers absolutely deliver the goods this time around with their very game supporting crew in tow throughout.

Super Smash Burton Brothers continues at Criterion at the Garden Of Unearthly Delights until 28 February.
