Apiculture: The Art & Science of Beekeeping presented by Painswick Rococo Gardens beekeeper

Apiculture: The Art & Science of Beekeeping presented by Painswick Rococo Gardens beekeeper, David Privett. Wednesday 20th May 2026
Today is National Bee Day!
Painswick Rococo Garden is a Georgian horticultural marvel which nestles in a hidden valley and boasts fantastic vistas, serpentine paths and rolling countryside, studded with charming follies, like its striking Exedra and Red House. It is especially famous for its display of over 5 million snowdrops but is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year.
The Garden dates back to the 1740s, when artist Thomas Robins was commissioned to paint it. Inspired by this artwork, over two centuries later the mammoth task of rediscovering and recreating the garden we enjoy again today was begun.
Set on the Bothy bank Rococo beekeeper David Privett installed his hives in late 2025. David has been keeping bees since 2009 initially having just a couple of hives in his father in laws back garden, and then going on to install ten hives in the grounds of the Hilton Doubletree in Cheltenham where he sells honey at the reception desk and in the leisure spa club.
Beekeeping dates back millennia, with evidence in Egyptian tombs and cave paintings. Bees are crucial pollinators for agriculture, responsible for much of the food we eat. David will lift the lid on hive life, explain the queens role, worker bees duties, drones purpose and the life cycle of a bee. He will cover seasonal influences, UK flora and how bees interact with their environment, as well as how you can adapt your own garden to nurture these wonderful creatures.
The Garden boosts a Kitchen Garden and Orchard. Produce from this is made into jams and chutneys, pickles, beer, cider, perry and wine. The bees play a vital role in this chain From Garden to Your Table. Honey is jarred and also used to make soap, candles, ice cream and cakes all available in the Garden shop and caf.
