In this course we will be taking an artistic journey across continents charting the ways some inspiring and influential artists have drawn from their indigenous culture, migration experiences and European colonialism as well as modern political struggles to shape the art of their homelands and beyond. This course will have a focus on Latin American modern artists who explored: -Surrealism: Leonora Carrington (UK/Mexico) -Pioneering collage: Mary Delany (UK) -Modern art: Tarsila do Amaral (Brazil) -Contemporary art in textiles: Claudia Casarino (Paraguay) -Naïve art: Ysanne Gayet (Sri Lanka/UK/Paraguay) We will then be making our own artworks using a variety of media including painting, drawing, collage and textiles to create our own responses to the artist's techniques and the region's rich art history.
