Astatine Trio

One third Slovenian, two thirds Brightonian and three thirds BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, the award-winning, all-female Astatine Trio contrast classic works by Haydn and Mendelssohn with a 2013 piece by contemporary Japanese master Toshio Hosokawa. Written in London on the second of his two visits, Haydn’s typically inventive Trio was composed for a famous female pianist of the day. Hailed by Schumann as “the master trio of our age”, Mendelssohn’s D minor also features brilliant piano writing throughout, not least in its featherlight fairy scherzo. Hosokawa’s Trio offers a shaman-inspired vision of the cosmos, with violin and cello playing at yin and yang.
