Learn how to use a sewing machine and make an easy sewing project in just a few hours. Beginners sewing day – course description This fun class is a quick and easy introduction to sewing. It provides the starting point to learn some foundation sewing techniques whether you want to progress into dressmaking, soft furnishing or craft projects. You’ll learn how to understand sewing machines, get experience of using different stitch types, learn about stitch lengths, widths and tensions. I’ll explain what some of the different presser feet are for and you’ll learn how to measure and cut fabric. Then there’s an easy sewing project to make so you can practice your new skills. During the Beginners Sewing Day, I’ll be sharing lots of my tips. So you can benefit from my mistakes and learn to sew like a pro. Who is this aimed at? Adult Beginners (if you’ve not used a sewing machine before). What will I learn? How to use a sewing machine safely and confidently How to wind bobbins and thread up the machine Understand the importance of correct thread tension How to sew perfect straight lines, smooth curves and turn corners How to take up a hem An easy sewing project. Artisan Stitch holds a Certificate of Excellence for Best Sewing classes in Edinburgh 2019, and won a UK Enterprise Award for Best Sewing Classes 2020. Further awards have followed every year since with a current nomination for the Scotland Prestige Awards 2025/26. It is the only sewing course provider in Edinburgh that’s recommended by Queen Margaret University for sewing tuition, and one of only 2 in Scotland.
