Socialite and author Charles Condomine is suffering from writers block over a novel he is writing about the occult, so decides to find material by inviting friends to his house for a sance, led by the eccentric medium Madame Arcati.
The event leads to the most unusual and unlikely mnage-a-trois in the history of the stage as Arcati inadvertantly summons the ghost of Charles late, and rather temperamental first wife, Elvira. However, as only Charles can see or hear her, it causes utter chaos in his marriage to second wife, Ruth. Whilst Charles and Ruth attempt to send Elvira back to where she came from, Elvira, being wilful and jealous, has other ideas...
