Brahms and the Gypsy

Brahms and the Gypsy
BRAHMS AT THE RED HEDGEHOG
If you had turned up at the popular C19 Viennese tavern, Zum Roten Igel (The Red Hedgehog) - you might well have bumped in to Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn or Brahms, enjoying jokes, goulash, gypsy songs and general banter. This weekends events explore the kinds of Hungarian music that Brahms might well have heard there. Come and explore how these influences found their way into his greatest works, not least his sublime Clarinet Quintet.

Event 3: Brahms and the Gypsy concert

Brahms and the Gypsy presents a second performance of Brahms Clarinet Quintetre-scored with folk instruments and freshly re-imagined with improvisations that really dig into and explore its Hungarian roots.

ZRI [https://www.zrimusic.com] accordionist Jon Banks says We started life with Brahms and his Clarinet Quintet. I wanted to play that repertoire, but in a way that would evoke the time Brahms was living in, a sound world more visceral than just string quartet and clarinet.

This was a typically pioneering, stimulating project from ZRI and the Lammermuir Festival vivid, vibrant and provocative ★★★★★ (The Scotsman)
