Black holes sometimes sound more like science fiction than science fact, but the recent breakthrough results on gravitational waves and the amazing image of the shadow of an event horizon show the reality behind the equations. This introduction to black holes will explain how we can ‘see’ them and guide us through the science behind the images, a wonderful world where spacetime itself ripples and light gets bent around.

Café Scientifique at ARC – Stockton’s only science café Café Scientifique has been bringing science and science-related subjects to the people of Stockton and surrounding areas for over 20 years. There’s no need to know anything about science to come to the Café, just be interested in the world around you and prepare to learn something new.

The Café is usually held at 7.45pm on the third Tuesday of the month. Guest speakers talk for 35-45 minutes and, following a short refreshment break, you can ask a question or comment using the roving mikes. The event usually finishes around 9.30pm.

The speakers are drawn from universities, health trusts and businesses across the region.
