Celebrating Devon's World-Class Heritage: Discovery Day at Berry Head National Nature Reserve

Celebrating Devon's World-Class Heritage: Discovery Day at Berry Head National Nature Reserve
The dramatic headland, with its iconic lighthouse and Napoleonic Fort, is surrounded by water on three sides and offers exceptional views across Torbay and beyond. It is Torbays most designated heritage site being a National Nature Reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Scheduled Ancient Monument. The adjacent marine areas are part of a Special Area of Conservation and the Tor Bay Marine Conservation Zone. Guided by Marije Zwager, Engagement Officer at Berry Head National Nature Reserve for Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, we will explore the birds, plants and insects of the cliffs and limestone grassland and the history of the fortifications on the headland. Emeritus Professor Malcolm Hart, Micropalaeontologist, will explain the geology and landscape and will lead us to view where the Berry Head Limestone was quarried for almost 200 years (until 1964) and see the Permian fractures infilled with red sandstone. The walk has some (optional) steeper parts, but the paths are firm underfoot. Sun protection/weatherproof clothing is advised dependent on conditions. There is a Visitor Centre, and the Guardhouse Caf, situated in the Napoleonic fort, will be open for refreshments from 9am. There is an adjacent picnic area and a small information display and toilets next to the caf. Car parking at Berry Head National Nature Reserve car park is 0.60 per 20 minutes up to 4 hours, with a charge of 7 for four hours or more, unless you are a member of the Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust and have a car pass. Meet at 10am by the arch at the entrance to the fort. For further information on Berry Head NNR, see:Berry Head National Nature Reserve [http://countryside-trust.org.uk/visit/berry-head/].
