Coco Dos Pretos (brazil)

Hailing from Recife, Brazil, Coco dos Pretos have proven themselves as a symbol of resilience, and cultural significance. Since 2006, the group has pioneered an innovative approach to the traditional coco rhythm, expanding and refining its sound while staying rooted in ancestral heritage.
Based in the Chão de Estrelas community, the group not only holds rehearsals but also leads a meaningful socio-cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-descendant culture. Through their work, they challenge the stigmas often attached to popular traditions such as coco, and above all, they celebrate and strengthen Afro-Brazilian identity and expression.
For the past 10 years, Coco dos Pretos has led the itinerant project “Onde é que Tá o Coco?” (“Where is the Coco?”), fostering exchanges with masters, teachers, and community groups of coco throughout the regions they visit.
In 2023, the group launched the first edition of the Canjerê Project by Coco dos Pretos-a landmark gathering dedicated to encounter, communion, and exchange within Afro-Indigenous cultural traditions.. The Canjerê, aside from promoting and safeguarding culture, is a reunion, a grand meeting of exchange and ancestral knowledge where musicality, art, culture, theatre, and dance, whereby Coco dos Pretos reaffirm the sacred, historical and ancestral legaices of their community. The event brings together masters, teachers, cultural leaders, and guardians of popular traditions.
