Dorothy Wordsworth and the Poetry of the Seasons

Dorothy Wordsworth and the Poetry of the Seasons
Title:Dorothy Wordsworth and the Poetry of the Seasons (a Cultural Landscapes event) About the Talk: Dorothy Wordsworths Alfoxden and Grasmere Journals have long been known to and loved by many readers. Her poems, however, are less well known. Between 1805 and 1840, Dorothy composed around thirty poems. They were written for her close friends and family, they offer advice and guidance to children, they reflect on the turns of the seasons, and explore the power of memory and imagination. Many of the poems were written in the 1830s when Dorothy was confined to Rydal Mount and faced the twists and turns of an unpredictable illness. The talk will introduce a handful of Dorothys poems, exploring how her observations of seasonal changes in the landscape helped provide consolation in times of distress. Our Speaker: Dr Jessica Fay works in the Department of English Literature at the University of Birmingham. She is the author of Wordsworths Monastic Inheritance (Oxford, 2018) and editor of The Collected Letters of Sir George and Lady Beaumont to the Wordsworth Family (Liverpool, 2021). She is currently preparing the Cambridge Collected Edition of The Poetry of Dorothy Wordsworth . Venue: Percival Lecture Theatre, Langdale Building, at the University of Cumbria's Ambleside Campus. See Ambleside campus map. [https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/media/Ambleside-Campus-Map.pdf] Please note this is an in-person event only .
