Dvok Mass In D Major and Kodly Missa Brevis

Dvok Mass In D Major and Kodly Missa Brevis
Following 2 sold out concerts we are delighted to present an evening of music by composers from eastern Europe. Antonn Dvok 1841 -1904 is widely regarded as the most distinguished of the Czech composers, perhaps best known for his 'New World' Symphony. For this concert we will perform the 1887 'Mass in D Major, his melodic and uplifting sole surviving setting of the Mass Ordinary. Zoltn Kodly 1882 - 1967 was a Hungarian composer who spent much of his career transcribing and recording authentic folk music, but his 'Missa Brevis' , premiered in 1945, was written when the Russian army was besieging Nazi-occupied Budapest, and is a powerful work of spiritual supplication for mercy and peace that still resonates in today's uncertain world. We shall be conducted by our Director of Music Simon Lovell-Jones.
