Dvorak

Come and Join us for an all- Dvok Programme.
We start with Carnival Overture. The title conjures up an image of circus / clowns / festivals but this was not Dvok's intention. He was trying to portray the Carnival of life and nature.
We then play a selection of his Slavonic dances ; inspired by the rhythms and idioms of folk music nd dance from Bohemia, these are original rather than arrangements or quotations from the traditional pieces of the area.
Despite Symphony No 9 ("From the New World") being better known, his Symphony No 7 is regarded by many in the know as being greater.
Dvok was very much in favour of independence of the Czech nation from the Austria - Hungarian empire - something that was not to happen until 1918. The first performance took place in London in 1885 with Dvorak himself conducting.
