The holiday in the South of France had been glorious. James Patterson had rented a villa in the foothills of the mountains that lay behind Menton, and family and friends had spent a month soaking up the sunshine in the Cote DAzur.

On one of their trips, they visited the cemetery that lay within the walls of the old chateau high above the town. In order to get a better view of the Italian border James had walked over the grave of one Alice Porter who had died, aged 12, in 1881. He made a bit of a joke of this by apologising to Alice and thanking her for letting him walk across her grave.

A few days later he was convinced that he was being followed, and that, in the night, he could hear the voice of a young girl saying, Come and join me James, Im lonely. He brushed this off and the family returned home.

However, the feeling that he was being haunted did not go away, even after he returned home. He became withdrawn and agitated, he couldnt sleep and he had the feeling that a malevolent force was stalking him. Then, one morning in October, he was found dead in the library of his friends house and written in blood on the wall next to his body was one word . Alice.

Was it the spirit of a long dead girl seeking a companion in the afterlife or was it something more prosaic. The police were called and an investigation ensued. The Investigator called his suspects together at the local Inn and called on the other guests to help him get to the truth before the evening was out.
