How to Paint a Masterpiece

Masterpieces don't emerge serenely from an artist's studio. They are forged through a dynamic struggle between artists and their materials. Artist and broadcaster Lachlan Goudie uncovers how the physical elements of painting - pigments, surfaces and techniques - have shaped artistic expression and driven the course of art history. Beginning with the earliest cave pigments at Chauvet 36,000 years ago, he traces a story of innovation through ink, fresco, oil paint, acrylic and digital media. Along the way, he brings to life artists from Giotto to Hockney, revealing how each breakthrough in materials has transformed what painting can be, and continues to be, today.
