Benjamin Britten's playful and sparkling interpretation of music by Rossini leads us into a long overdue revival of John Joubert's first symphony. Praised as a magnificent piece… of considerable substance and great expressive strength, the work was commissioned by the Hull Philharmonic Society and premiered in 1956, and we are delighted to bring this profoundly rewarding work back to the City Hall. Noted for its balance between heart and head, it sits perfectly alongside Tchaikovsky's mighty fifth symphony.
