Buzz into the fascinating world of honeybees with this immersive, hands-on workshop at Hackney School of Food. Led by our resident beekeeper and food educator, Tom, this three-hour session offers a chance to explore Hackney School of Foods beehives and learn about the intricate lives of these essential pollinators. You'll learn the history and basics of beekeeping, discover how to create bee-friendly environments, and get up close with our own buzzing residents. And of course, no beekeeping session would be complete without a honey tasting! Sample a curated selection of honeys and explore how to cook creatively with this golden, natural sweetener. What youll learn The basics of bee biology and hive behaviour A brief history of beekeeping and its cultural significance How to safely open and inspect a hive Ways to support pollinators at home and in your community Tips for cooking with and tasting different kinds of honey About your Teacher Tom is Head Food Educator at Hackney School of Food and a second-generation beekeeper. Since stepping into the world of beekeeping in 2020, hes developed deep practical experience, particularly in urban apiculture. Passionate about both bees and food, Tom is really excited to share knowledge and enthusiasm with you. What to bring Shoes and (depending on weather) raincoat for walking around the garden. Tickets: 48 full price includes all materials, hot drinks and cake for breaks. (8-10 tickets) 35 concession price - for those who are on lower incomes, not working or students. (4 tickets) Optional donation of 20 if youre able to contribute a bit more. Concession tickets We offer 4 concession tickets for those on lower incomes (e.g. receiving Universal Credit, unemployed, or students). Please book these tickets only if this applies to you. Spaces are limited, so book early to secure your spot! What to bring: Shoes and (depending on weather) raincoat for walking around the garden. Location: This will take place in our garden room and growing garden in Clapton Hackney. Address: Oswald Street, E5 OBT. Refunds/transfers: We rely on the income from our classes to fund our not-for-profit social enterprise. Please give at least 14 days' notice for cancellations or transfers. If you're unable to attend at the last minute, youre welcome to pass your ticket to a friend or family member - just email us at [email protected] to let us know. Note: This is a fundraising class, and the proceeds help Hackney School of Food provide free community classes and subsidised food education for children and adults across Hackney and beyond.
