Trumpeter James Borland first visited the club in Nov 23 as part of the Birmingham based sextet Abacus led by Liam Brennan, and impressed greatly with his warm sound and inventive phrasing. James was recently seen in national media performing with Bostin Brass, the band picked to lead the funeral cortge for Ozzy Osbourne. One of the most in-demand young musicians of the vibrant Birmingham jazz scene, his characterful improvising speaks both of his love of the jazz tradition, and also the forward-thinking melodicism of contemporary NY figureheads such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Immanuel Wilkins. His quartet brings together an impressive young rhythm section who share his love of free-flowing, exciting jazz music, featuring sought-after bass and drum team Ben Love and Kai Chareunsy, and BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Nick Manz on piano.
