Jazz and Jests: A 1927 Musical Feast

Jazz and Jests: A 1927 Musical Feast
An exciting and collaborative programme of jazz infused and light-hearted music courtesy of Southampton-based artists the Mayflower Ensemble - clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, violin, cello & piano. Writer and actor Lucy Mellors will be performing a newly commissioned narration during Martinů’s 1927 ballet La Revue de Cuisine. The work, which takes its unlikely storyline – the activities of a set of kitchen utensils, was one of the composer’s personal favourites. Southampton-based Benjamin Oliver has arranged Captured especially for this concert. Written in the same year as Martinů’s ballet, Alfredo Casella's prize-winning composition Serenata, showcases the ensemble in duos and trios. The concert is presented by the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Humanities in association with Performing Arts Collaboration South and Turner Sims as part of the ‘Screening Live Performance’ conference.
