Big Youth (Manley Augustus Buchanan) stands as one of reggae’s original voices of the people. A groundbreaking Jamaican deejay, his 1970s rise gave voice to the streets through the unfiltered power of sound systems. AbaKush, the powerful female-led collective formed in 1981, merged roots reggae with jazz, gospel, and soca. Founded by lead vocalist Denise “Jena” Davis, the group’s name-‘Abbah’ (Father) and ‘Kush’ (Africa)-signals their deep cultural vision.
