Ocean of Her

Ocean of Her
'Ocean of Her' is an exhibition showcasing the newest body of work by Edinburgh-based artist and art therapist Jessica Kirkpatrick. Supported by the RSA’s Blackadder Travel Award and the Hope Scott Trust, this work was made in response to the artist’s recent residency in Teotihuacan, Mexico, where she engaged in sacred site work and Toltec practices. Coming off the heels of her recent certification as an art therapy practitioner, the exhibition is also an opportunity for Kirkpatrick to debut a new hybrid identity as artist, healer, and facilitator.

The exhibition comprises a multi-media installation of drawings and cyanotypes made both in Mexico and Edinburgh, a time-based video work, and a series of paintings which are a departure from her earlier, more narrative work - embracing the kinaesthetic, haptic and psychic dimensions of the canvas. Rather than pursuing aesthetic perfection or technical mastery, Kirkpatrick works through process, presence, and emotional truth. Each brush mark becomes an act of devotion—a tactile anchor into attentive awareness. In these works, the canvas functions not only as a surface for images but as a psychic frame in which sensation, memory, and intuition can unfold. (Free and open to the public)
