The List

Otl: Mark Cherrie Quartet

Otl: Mark Cherrie Quartet
Mark Cherrie performs his second quartet album. As a vastly experienced steel pan player, he has developed a completely unique voice on an instrument that, for some, still remains a novelty instrument. Supported by some of the UK’s foremost jazz musicians, Mark proves that in his hands, the instrument itself can be a genuine jazz voice. The material takes the listener on a journey through many jazz forms, as well as a surprising cover version.

As a side note, Mark has been composing music for TV & film for well over 20 years, in addition to actively playing for musicians such as Edwin Starr, Jimmy Ruffin, Odyssey, Ronnie Laws and Gary Barlow, to name but a few. He was also honoured to have recorded live steel pan on the original soundtrack to Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

John Donaldson won Best Soloist at San Sebastian in 1980 before moving to California, collaborating with leading musicians including Eddie Henderson. Returning to London in 1993, he has worked with Iain Ballamy, Art Themen and others, and performed with international soloists such as Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Ingrid Jensen and Norma Winstone.

Drummer Eric Ford performs internationally at clinics and festivals with Partikel and artists including Maciek Pysz and Mornington Lockett. Known for his versatility and expressive style, he has built a strong and growing reputation across a wide range of contemporary jazz settings.

Tom Mason, a Royal Academy and New England Conservatory graduate, is a highly versatile UK bassist and has worked with artists including Mark Ronson, Anoushka Shankar, Jamie Cullum, Questlove, Angelique Kidjo, Anoushka Shankar, and many more. He is a long‑time member of Robert Mitchell’s Panacea. His debut album Joining the Dots earned critical acclaim and Arts Council support for touring.
