Paper Dress' 19th Birthday: Fela Kuti
paper dress vintage turns 19

This year we're going AFROBEAT - celebrating the music & legacy of the legendary Fela Kuti

And we're delighted to announce that Bukky Leo & Black Egypt will be bringing their mighty 7-piece Afrobeat powerhouse show to our stage!

And what a story this man has...

Growing up in Lagos, a young Bukky was spotted practising his very first saxophone by none other than Tony Allen, the original Afrobeat drummer, who promptly recruited him into his band. From there, Bukky went on to play alongside Fela Kuti himself, right at the birth of the Afrobeat movement!

Arriving in London in 1982, Bukky became a pioneering figure in the emerging acid jazz scene, signed by a young Gilles Peterson to the newly formed Acid Jazz label. His debut release Rejoice in Righteousness shot to number one in the R&B, dance and jazz charts, while follow-up River Nile earned him an African Music Awards nomination in New York.

Decades of incredible music followed, from The Source and Tony Allen's Afro-Beat Big Band to the formation of Black Egypt, his own heavyweight Afrobeat outfit.

We last caught them at We Out Here and they've previously played Love Supreme, R★★onnie Scott's, Jazz Café and the Royal Festival Hall so, it's a real treat to welcome them to our little stage in Hackney!

Expect & incredible musicians, thunderous rhythms, blazing horns & irresistible grooves

Plus DJ sets from Flamingods and special guests who'll be spinning Afrobeat & Afro Disco grooves till late
