An Evening Of Widescreen Pedal Steel Guitar

An Evening of Widescreen Pedal Steel Guitar
with BJ Cole, Joe Harvey-Whyte and David Murphy
Three of today's trailblazers in contemporary pedal steel guitar come together for a one-off show to present each of their unique and singular approaches to the ever-mysterious and most evocative of instruments.
Bj Cole
BJ Cole continues to prove himself the most essential and pioneering Pedal Steel Guitarist in the UK today. Since the 1970's, his uniquely eclectic style made an impact on the British music scene with inimitable contributions to records by Elton John, Joan Armatrading, Marc Bolan, Scott Walker, The Stranglers, kd lang, Deacon Blue and Paul Young and more earning him considerable respect as both an innovative and exciting creative force. BJ's desire to pioneer the use of the instrument far beyond its traditional context in Country Music has ensured that he has continued to expand its horizons into uncharted territory. The success of this pioneering approach has been born out through sessions and live performances with artists as diverse as David Sylvian, Depeche Mode, Beck, Bjork, Sting, John Cale and most recently, Martin Simpson and Tom Jones.
Joe Harvey-whyte
Joe Harvey-Whyte is one of the UK’s most in demand pedal steel guitar players, known for his session work with artists as diverse as Liam Gallagher & John Squire, James Vincent McMorrow and Alabama 3 as well as his own cutting-edge compositions and intriguing forays into ambient, experimental and environmental sounds. His solo work combines the sound of the pedal steel guitar with electronics and field recordings to make works that create space for deep listening and reflection whilst attempting to translate and subtly amplify the quieter moments of everyday life.
David Murphy
David Murphy is best known for his pedal steel work with artists such as The Lost Brothers, The Delines, M.Ward and Jolie Holland amongst others. His debut album ‘Cuimhne Ghlinn: Explorations in Irish Music for Pedal Steel Guitar’ takes it from the well-worn roads of the dusty American south to a new place in contemporary Irish music. His all-instrumental debut recasts ancient Irish harp tunes and historic airs into the 21st century with the swelling, expressive and mournful sounds of the pedal steel guitar. This continues Murphy’s quest to expand the vocabulary of the instrument, taking it deeper into a world much closer to home and, for the very first time, presenting it in a modern Irish framework.
