We welcome back three great friends of the Goods Shed, Matthew Denton (violin) and Emma Denton (cello), members of the Carducci String Quartet, and William Howard (piano). They offer another varied programme of piano trios following their successful performance here in January last year. To mark the 50thanniversary of the Shostakovichs death they will perform his haunting Second Piano Trio, completed in 1944. The tragic character of this powerful work reflects the composers response to the horrors of the war and also his grief following the death of a close friend. Alongside this Trio are two completely contrasting works. Beethovens Ghost Trio owes its nickname (not Beethovens own) to the eerie writing of its slow movement, which itself is framed by two joyously extrovert movements. Dvoks much loved Dumky Trio is a feast of folk dance and melody, which carries us along in alternate moods of reflection and exuberance.
