Webern’s ‘slow movement’ is the yearning of unrequited love as a 21-year old, while Mendelssohn at the same age captures the experience of visiting Scotland in 1829. The energetic, joyous melodies of Dvořák’s ‘American’ string quartet recall a happy summer spent with fellow Czechs in Iowa in 1893. Undiscovered quartet music led to the Piatti’s premiere recording of Irish composer Ina Boyle’s String Quartet of 1934.
