Some of the most varied and dazzling piano works of the twentieth century - a rare opportunity to hear Prokofiev's sonata masterpieces in sequence. Prokofiev's brilliant second sonata is an endlessly shifting kaleidoscope of romanticism, parody, brutality and tender lyricism, possibly one of his finest sonatas. The sonata is coupled with the with the witty charm of his fellow Russian Dimitry Kabalevsky's children's pieces and first sonatina. The subtle poetry of Fauré's 10th Nocturne and 9th Barcarolle, both works composed only a few years before the Prokofiev, demonstrate the originality of the latter.
