Robert Bruce is the hero king. Okay, he changed sides a few times, but he surely had right on his side, and a fair bit of might, born in those difficult early years with his band of brothers-at-arms by his side? That's certainly one way of looking at it. But it requires quite a bit of rose-tinted hindsight.

Historian Fiona Watson digs a little deeper, exploring Bruce's career up till he became king and the cost of his kingship, tracing a very different future for Scotland than the one he forced on the kingdom. Prepare for a very different King Robert than the one he'd like you to believe in.
