Ruth Theodore's songs fascinate audiences with their gripping honesty and distinctive lyricism. Over an array of unconventional guitar tunings, Ruth sings stories of the known universe with captivating vocal dexterity and poetic originality. Backed by soulful male vocalists, she moves almost recklessly between pacey political passages, stomping slide guitar, and enchanting piano pieces that conjure the compositional freedom of a young Keith Jarrett, with the timeless qualities of such artists as Carole King and Nina Simone. Turning her music on its head at every opportunity, Ruth's natural lyricism and deliberate turn of phrase is that of a skilled writer in command of, and having fun with, the idea of contemporary songwriting. And one gets the impression this unique british artist is only just getting started.
Ruth will be performing the new single from 'Cactacus' her anticipated fourth album which she recorded with producer and bassist Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell/Ani Difranco). Ruth travelled and played her way through California and up into Oregon to work alongside a stellar cast of musicians including organist Rob Burger (Tom Waits, Willie Nelson), percussionist Mathias Kunzli (Regina Spektor, Lauryn Hill), and Violinist Jenny Scheinman (Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed).
Ruth opened for american folk legend Ani DiFranco at London's Union Chapel back in 2012 and has released three solo albums to date, receiving critical acclaim from the UK media, with reviews running in The Guardian & The Observer, national radio play on BBC Radio3 and BBC6 music, alongside rave reviews in music magazines Mojo, Q, fRoots and more.
"Songs so quirky and unexpected that it's impossible to imagine anyone
else performing them, following none of the more conventional styles
of song-writing. And it actually works." - The Guardian ★★★★
"Her tales leave you breathless" - MOJO ★★★★
Support from.... LINAH ROCIO
Born in Santiago de Chile and currently based in Zurich, Linah Rocio's music is expressive and somewhat fragile - a mix of jazz, indie and pop with a spark of avant-garde. Her songs are encrypted in poetic language , mostly autobiographical -her voice touching yet strong.
"Her voice reminds me of Nordic landscapes, which have this stoic gentle charm when under the spell of wafts of mist." - Aargauer Zeitung (Newspaper)
