Sir Francis Drake & the Secrets of the Severn', with Mark Horton
During the Elizabethan era, the river Severn was one of the key waterways of England. Yet rarely does it feature in the standard maritime histories. Elizabeth Is explorer, courtier and privateer Francis Drake, visited and even hid there with his piratical treasure during the late 16th century. Mark Horton has a particular interest as he lives in Drake's reputed house near Lydney, but has also researched Drake's activities in Panama, Virginia and California. In a brand new talk he offers a fascinating reassessment of Drake's extraordinary global career, and how his connection with Gloucestershire shaped his voyages.
