Somerville Festival of the Piano: Broad stripes and Bright stars
To continue our series in 2025, we hop across the pond for Steve Reich’s seminal ‘Piano Phase’, one of his pioneering early works which kickstarted the Minimalist movement of the 1970s. Oxford-based pianists Sam Mitchell and Ian Tindale also perform John Adams' vibrant and brilliant ‘Hallelujah Junction’, from 1996, which inherits many elements of Reich’s minimal style. It's a kaleidoscope of colour and interlocking rhythms. The programme also includes Andriessen’s ‘Hague Hacking’, and current Oxford University students Dan Loach and Owen Thomas performing Dave Brubeck’s mighty ‘Points on Jazz’. Brubeck: Points on Jazz played by Dan Loach and Owen Thomas (piano) Andriessen: Hague Hacking Reich: Piano Phase Adams: Hallelujah Junction played by Ian Tindale and Sam Mitchell (pianos)
