South Shields (Arbeia): a late Roman fort and its afterlife - South Shields (Roman Arbeia) was one of the most important forts supporting Hadrian's Wall, being on the south bank of the Tyne not far from the eastern end of the Wall on the Tyne's north bank. Dr Nick Hodgson, well-known expert on Hadrian's Wall generally and Arbeia fort in particular (he was formerly Principal Keeper of Archaeology, Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums) will speak about the importance of the site and about recent work.
