Southampton Philharmonic Choir - Back to Baroque!

Southampton Philharmonic Choir - Back to Baroque!
Join us at our next concert, on 22 March at O2 Guildhall Southampton! (Doors open at 6.30 p.m. for the 7.30 p.m. concert.) A gem of a programme awaits you, featuring three of the Baroque era’s most beautiful and celebrated works. Our orchestra is the stylish, London-based Docklands Sinfonia, and David Gibson conducts. The concert opens with George Frideric Handel’s Silete Venti, a wonderfully expressive cantata for solo soprano voice that ranks among Handel’s finest compositions. Next, the first of the two choral items: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat in D, a splendid and jubilant composition scored for five soloists, a five-part choir, and (for its time) a large orchestra. It’s a piece that truly showcases Bach’s unparalleled mastery of vocal and instrumental interplay. Finally, we present a piece that’s renowned for its vibrant choral harmonies and spirited orchestration. By turns joyful and solemn, melancholic and festive, it is Antonio Vivaldi’s most famous choral work: his Gloria.
