St Albans Choral Society: Haydn Creation

St Albans Choral Society: Haydn Creation
For his final concert as Music Director of St Albans Choral Society, George Vass has chosen Joseph Haydns magnum opus,The Creation. A three-part oratorio composed in 1798, it celebrates the creation of the world as depicted in MiltonsParadise Lostand the book ofGenesis. Complete with a cast of characters and something of a cinematic orchestral score, the work plays out as a musical drama, changing landscapes and scenes summoned one after the other. The Creationis Haydns crowning masterpiece, a joyful balm in times of trouble. There is no terrifying God found anywhere in this wonderfully positive oratorio, which Haydn hoped would serve as a source of comfort to those suffering difficulties. The prevailing mood is exuberant, radiant and delights in Gods works. This spirit of unbounded joy and celebration has helpedThe Creationto endure throughout the years, a spiritual masterpiece for a secular age. St Albans Choral Society are joined by Sophia Jin (soprano), Matthew Sotillo-Cooke (tenor), Robert Rice (baritone) and theBlaze Ensemble.
