Summer Sinfonia Concert

Join the Westcliff Sinfonia for an orchestral celebration of all things Musical Theatre. Audience members will be treated to an evening of dramatic music, showcasing the variety of styles and emotions composers of Musical Theatre have to offer. The performance will include excerpts from Broadway classics such as Bernsteins West Side Story, retelling the story of Romeo and Juliet in twentieth century New York. Jerry Hermans Hello Dolly, an example from the golden age of Hollywood musicals, recently revived with stage and screen icon Imelda Staunton for the West End, will also feature. Those who enjoyed last years production of Les Misrables will enjoy the music from the other musical Schoenberg is most known for: Miss Saigons emotive story set in the Vietnam war is a staple of the Musical Theatre canon.
The concert will begin with a premiere of a piece by Year 13 composer Jamie Knight, written especially for the Westcliff Sinfonia; La Gare Saint-Lazare is a programmatic work following in the tradition of the French Impressionist musical style. Indeed, it is more directly inspired by Impressionism: following the tradition of adapting artwork to music, Jamie has chosen to translate Monets paintings of a French train station into an orchestral fantasy, depicting the smoke-filled surroundings of the station before exploring the station itself. This exciting composition is sure to stretch our most talented performers, and is not to be missed.
