Summer Songs and Sonnets

In our first concert under the direction of Tim Cranfield we are pleased to present an evening of music which is perfect for a summers night with a selection of items by composers who are both well-known and well-loved by singers and audiences and who are specialists in the art of song-writing for choirs.
With George Shearing we bring his light but highly individual approach to verses by Shakespeare. Bob Chilcotts setting of some of Aesops Fables is cleverly set to highly imaginative accompaniments. Ever popular John Rutter provides arrangements of two of our favourite folk songs. American Eric Whitacres lovely setting of Kiplings words in his Seal Lullaby brings an outsiders view of our literary heritage.
Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams are settings of religious poems by the 17th century poet and priest George Herbert, and while being beautifully written in both literary and musical terms, they provide a contrasting element of gravitas to the evenings proceedings.
Altogether we have a recipe for a perfectly balanced summer salad of music to whet your aural appetite. Do come and enjoy the feast.
