Surely it depends on the school? Introducing multilevel modelling with education data from the PISA
Multilevel modelling is an important tool for quantitative analysis of education data, since it equips us with the ability to both accommodate and explore the ways in which the structure of a school system might shape the outcomes for students within it. The PISA dataset represents a high-quality, publicly available dataset, recording the performance of students across OECD countries in tests of their language, maths and science ability. In this introductory workshop, we will discuss critically the practice of quantitatively analysing data from students across varying settings, and work hands-on with the data in Stata to begin to explore its structures. The workshop will be delivered in two sessions: an interactive seminar on the 19th of March from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a practical session in Stata on the 26th of March from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, teaching skills to carry out basic analysis. Participants are welcome to attend either or both sessions. No experience is required, and the core content will be introductory, but more extension activities will be included, and the presenter will be on hand to discuss more complex applications. This workshop will be of interest to anyone engaging with quantitative data in the field of education, and may additionally be of interest to those working in adjacent social sciences who have an interest in multilevel modelling.
