Talk: John Constable, the Man and his Landscape: 250 years since his birth

2026 marks a significant milestone, the 250th anniversary of John Constables birth.
This talk by Patricia Hodgkins of the National Trust, begins with a look at Flatford as it stands today, where every building in the small hamlet is now under the care of the Trust. Much of the surrounding Stour Valley is also owned by them, though not in its entirety.
Through a series of familiar paintings and related sketches, well explore Constables life in Suffolk, his artistic methods, and how he balanced his work between London and his beloved Suffolk landscape.
Finally, in this special anniversary year, well consider how Constables art came to capture the hearts of the English public and earned its enduring place in the nations affection.
