The Mikado - Gilbert & Sullivan

The Mikado - Gilbert & Sullivan
GASP have more than proved their credentials as a successful new Island theatre group in just two years of existence: both 'Pirates of Penzance' and 'Iolanthe' played to sell-out audiences and received amazing feedback including nominations for IW Amateur Theatre Awards: now they turn their sights on one of Gilbert & Sullivan's most famous productions, 'The Mikado'. The two act comic operetta tells the story of Nanki-poo who arrives in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu as a wandering minstrel, and falls in love with Yum-Yum. Unfortunately for him (and her, for she returns his affection), she is engaged to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, and Nanki-Poo has his own secrets. Ko-Ko meanwhile must not only fend off his rival in love but find someone to execute before The Mikado visits.... The (typically for G&S) very silly plot involves lots of misunderstandings, deceptions and doomed plans which, while hilarious in their own right, also satirise British politics and culture of the time - and for us demonstrate not much has changed since the show was written! Alongside the fun and silliness, The Mikado includes some of G&S's most famous songs, such as 'Three Little Maids From School', 'A Wand'ring Minstrel I', 'I've Got a Little List' and 'Tit Willow'. The Mikado has been continuously performed and enjoyed for almost 140 years and is still as popular as ever - tickets for this new production are sure to sell just as quickly as GASP's other shows have - so avoid disappointment by booking now!
