Join us at Woodhorn Museum and meet other home educating families as we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day and celebrate Local History Month during our May Home Educator Day!
Book a workshop to take part in with your child and then explore the Museum for the rest of the day for free!
Our bookable workshops are:
Bevin boys and evacuees
10.30-11.30am
Who were the Bevin Boys and why were they important during the second world war? Find out about the lives of these conscripted miners, what life was like working down the pit and why coal was so important to the war effort.
Later, find out about evacuees and their lives during the war.
Recommended for children working at ages 8+. Parents/guardians are welcome to decide if it's appropriate for younger children. This workshop may contain loud noises.
WWII Colliery Tour "Bomb Blast
1.15 - 2.15pm
During WWII a bomb landed on our Walker Fan building. Find out what happened as we take a tour of our site and look at historical documents to find out more about this event.
Recommended for children working at ages 8+. The colliery buildings are accessible by ramp. There may be some uneven areas on the Pit Yard. This workshop will take place outdoors, so weather-appropriate clothing is recommended.
Our bookable workshop prices are 4 per child, per workshop, and accompanying adults are free. Spaces are limited and children (under the age of 16) must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Workshops are will be led by members of our Learning Team.
While youre here, why not relax in our caf with a hot drink and take part in free crafts at our mini museum stations.
For younger visitors there will be a free Early Years Storytime session from 10:30 11:00am (included as part of existing pass or day ticket, no need to book).
