Zine Culture/Zine Life
Punks are taking over! Attitude Problem Zine editor Steve Hyland will introduce his collection of zines from the mid-80s to the present day and talk about how zines represent part of the counterculture within the DIY punk scene and beyond. Steve will talk about their journey of going to gigs in their home county of Essex, finding zines, and the power of how DIY and punk rock enabled a young punk in a town with few other punks to communicate with, a journey into the outside world and beyond. From interviewing bands, learning how to write and compile articles into a finished zine ready for printing, collating, and sending off to other DIY distros around Britain and the globe, this talk is an autobiographical tale of the power of zines and what opportunities life can give you from a DIY punk perspective, and our relationship with mainstream media and creating our own narrative and history. Rock out to a playlist of specially curated punk rock from across generations whilst you check out Zines from Ska to Oi! to Hardcore Punk to Riot Grrrl! Limited bar service available. Part of Voice of the Fans [https://libraries.leeds.gov.uk/what-you-can-do/voice-fans-exhibition], an exhibition co-produced by the British Library and Leeds Libraries, which explores over 60 years of fan-made media from their collections that has defined the beautiful game.
