Cannonball Restaurant & Bar

One of a trio of venues owned by the Contini family in Edinburgh, Cannonball really couldn’t be closer to the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town action. Right at the top of the Royal Mile, it’s named after a gunshot lodged in the wall (rumoured to have been shot towards Holyrood Palace when Bonnie Prince Charlie was in residence) and is also the proud possessor of Scotland’s oldest door knocker. Diners can practically see into Edinburgh Castle: each small window shows off a little slice of history and it’s fun to sit above the crowded Royal Mile and people-watch, especially come Festival time.
The Continis know a thing or two about sourcing, and Cannonball’s menu is a homage to Scotland’s larder. It’s a great way to tick off the big ticket ingredients: haggis, trout, oysters, mutton, venison and plenty of local fish and veg pack out the menu in a way that will both delight tourists while not infuriating the natives. In other words, it’s all good stuff, with confident saucing and immaculate plating elevating the experience. Chefs finish dishes out front at the bar, which adds to an informal, laid-back vibe. There's also a cute downstairs bar offering small plates along the lines of oysters and cheese, with a huge selection of whisky available to round off your night.
