Sugar Boat
The Clydeside ‘seaside’ town of Helensburgh has seen its dining credentials greatly improve over recent years. That’s partly thanks to family-friendly bistro Sugar Boat, named after local landmark the MV Captayannis, whose capsized, partly submerged hull has been visible from the town since it hit a sandbank in 1974. The bistro, run by Will Smith whose previous London restaurants held Michelin stars, has an informal, stylish set-up, with bar-café area up front, dining at back, plus al fresco options onto a square. Food is all-day dining, from breakfasts and weekend brunch to Sunday lunch and dinner, where local sourcing goes into the likes of moules, smoked mackerel, burgers, seafood dishes and steak frites. A diligent bar provides plenty of drink options, including some well-considered wines (also available from the shop), plus there are a few rooms to rent upstairs.
