10 bread & patisserie shops across Glasgow

Big Bear Bakery
54 Sinclair Drive & 21 Dowanhill Street
The black sesame sourdough loaves here are strong contenders for the city’s best. Big Bear does a lot more besides bread, from danishes and cinnamon buns to sausage rolls and filled croissants (their sandwich game is also good). Get down early if you want one of those loaves.

Burnfield Bakery
717 Pollokshaws Road
In an area with no shortages of bakeries, this one stands out. Burnfield’s window counter groans under its own weight: gigantic cinnamon buns, tomato focaccia, pain suisse, almond croissants, spinach and feta swirls, carrot cakes and seasonal specials to keep things fresh. You can’t go wrong.

Cottonrake Bakery
497 Great Western Road
It’s hard to believe that this bakery has been serving some of the city’s best bread and laminated pastries for 15 years now. The baguettes and sourdough are top drawer, as are the viennoiserie, cakes and tarts. You’ll struggle to get your order wrong: everything is delicious.

Deanston Bakery
167 Deanston Drive
Comforting bakes, warm welcomes and generous portions sum this place up well. The savoury offering is extensive: doorstopper sandwiches, bagels, breads and seasonal buns. The sweet side is also well covered, from cinnamon buns and cookies to chocolate cake, strawberry turnovers and Ukrainian specials like baked cheesecake.

Honey Trap
4 Skirving Street
Every weekend since 2021, this Skirving Street spot has shown that plant-based baking doesn’t have to leave you wanting. The savouries aren’t an afterthought: think sausage rolls, danishes and jalapeño pies. Alongside there are intricate pastries, seasonal tarts, buns, cookies and brownies. It might be hard for the uninitiated to guess, but it’s all vegan, honestly.

Kaf Coffee
5 Hyndland Street
Such is the skilful lamination at this wee bakery, you can’t beat a simple croissant. But there are more complex offerings too, like a cardamom monkey knot with lemon and poppy seed, as well as swirls, doughnuts, sandwiches and savoury weekend specials. The sourdough loaves and baguettes are also, rightly, much sought-after.

Also try... Outlier, which although also a café and restauranthas some of the city’s best baked goods and bread. Just around the corner is vegan specialist bakery Dorky French on Parnie Street. Also worth a mention is Fleur Bakery in Rutherglen and, for gluten free, look no further than Southside’s Wild Flours.
