It's Halloween so time to study your horror history. Unsurprisingly Netflix have some killer classics amongst their back catalogue. So if you are in the mood for some vintage frights or modern classics check out our top ten scary movies.

1. Child's Play (1988)

The birth of Chucky the killer doll possessed by serial killer Charles Lee Ray (voiced by Brad Dourif). One of the 80s most enduring horror icons with five sequels to date.

2. The Craft (1996)

Witchcraft gets out of hand as Robin Tunney joins a coven when she moves to a new high school. A teen classic that slots in perfectly alongside Heathers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

3. Event Horizon (1997)

After the Alien franchise Event Horizon is probably the scariest sci-fi horror out there. Sam Neil, Laurence Fishburn and Joely Richardson are sent to the outer reaches of the universe to investigate a spaceship that has returned from a blackhole. Think Hellraiser in space.

4. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

It might seem strange to choose the fourth instalment in long running franchise but The Final Chapter is arguably the best Friday 13th movie. By now Jason has picked up his hockey mask and the series has become the personification of the slasher genre. Featuring Corey Feldman for added 80s kudos.

5. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Robert Rodriguez directs from a Quentin Tarantino script. From Dusk Till Dawn starts as a heist movie – with George Clooney as bankrobber Seth Gecko barely controlling his violent psychopathic brother Richard (Tarantino) after they kidnap the Fuller family (including Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis) – then goes absolutely batshit crazy after they reach the Mexican border. Two sequels and the TV adaptation are also available on Netflix.

6. The Island of Dr Moreau: Director's Cut (1977)

1977 adaptation of HG Wells cautionary tale of science gone mad. Michael York washes up on a desert island populated by half human / half animal hybrids ruled over by Dr Moreau (Burt Lancaster).

7. The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)

Can you really classify The Human Centipede as a 'classic'? It's certainly earned it's place in pop culture with its outrageous concept (a mad scientist stitches three unwitting strangers mouth to anus to form a living breathing human centipede). Both unsavoury sequels are also available on Netflix UK.

8. My Bloody Valentine (2009)

Another slice of 80s slasher action as a masked killer strikes on Valentine's Day in a small mining town.

9. Paranormal Activity (2007)

A modern classic and genuine movie phenomenon. Made for around $15,000 it earned almost $200 million at the box office. Setting this ghost story in bland suburbia was incredibly effective, bringing the horror home. Unfortunately it also unleashed a wave of inferior found footage copycats. Four of the PA sequels are also on Netflix.

10. Scream (1996)

Scream totally revitalised the entire genre when released in 1996. Neve Campbell is stalked by the Ghostface killer as master of horror West Craven turns slasher clichés on their head with this whip smart meta-movie. From the ultra-creepy opening sequence with Drew Barrymore ('Do you like scary movies?) this was a horror film for people who loved horror films. Netflix UK is also screening MTV's Scream TV series.
