There was once a point where beer was thought of as a drink only enjoyed by old punters perched on their bar stool sporting a beer belly. But we are now in an age where ale is the tipple of choice for many – breweries are run by young ambitious beer lovers, IPA is the drink of the hipsters and festivals dedicated to spreading beer-filled joy are popping up all over the country. If you're revelling in the craft beer revolution, here's a list of Scottish festivals you might want to mark in the diary this autumn.

Jocktoberfest
This beery celebration gets extra points for serving festival goers beer that's just a stone's throw away from where it's brewed. Over 30 live acts are expected to play over the weekend and camping is included in the price of the ticket, so no designated drivers needed.

Spirit of Speyside: Distilled
Following years of success from the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, the organisers have this year introduced a three-day celebration of whisky, gin, food and of course, beer. Local craft breweries Windswept Brewing, Spey Valley Brewery and Speyside Craft Brewery are all set to showcase their brews.

Inverurie Beer Festival
The people behind Banchory Beer Festival (held in February and August), are also the brains behind the Inverurie Beer Festival, held at the end of this month. Alongside a carefully selected range of craft beers, the event also offers cider, gin, prosecco and Scotland's first rum.

North Lanarkshire Beer Festival
Lanarkshire's beer festival returns for another year offering a variety of beers from across the globe. The two day event also hosts several live music acts and invites a range of food vendors to supply some grub to supplement the ale.

Ayrshire Beer Festival
CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) brings back the Ayrshire Beer Festival for another year, with an impressive 150 ales from all over the UK. New this year is an additional 'Birdie Bar', offering appropriately-themed brews. For those serious about their beer, tutored tastings are also available on Thursday and Friday.

Angus Brewfest
After their first year went down swimmingly, the Angus Farmers' Market have brought their one-day beer celebration back. The wide range of producers means there's plenty of chance to chat with the brewers and sample a variety of local beers.

Oktoberfest (Edinburgh)
Celebrating Oktoberfest just like they do in Bavaria (or near enough), Edinburgh's German beer festival takes place over five days directly under the castle in Princes Street Gardens. Make sure to have your Lederhosen ready, or you'll look as awkward as the joker next to you who can't hold their stein.

Oktoberfest (Glasgow)
Slap bang in the city centre, Oktoberfest in Glasgow is hard to miss. Two weeks after the Edinburgh celebration, the festival heads over to Blythswood Square to continue the madness. For a more respectable occasion, head on the last day where their Sunday lunch lets the whole family experience the Bavarian culture.

Ullapool Beer Festival
Started with an aim to showcase the range of real ales in the Highlands of Scotland, the Ullapool Beer Festival is now in its 11th year with over 16 beers to sample including Fallen Brewing Co., Windswept Brewing and Thistly Cross Cider.

Craft Beer Revolution Festival
The newest addition to the beer festival scene is introduced by Leith-born pals Richard Servranckx and Dan Quille. The duo aim to showcase over 60 beers at the event from lagers to hoppy ales. Look out for their own Craft Beer Revolution beer too, a spicy, double red rye IPA, brewed in collaboration with Andrew Ushers & Co.
