The 23rd edition of The List Eating and Drinking Guide is out

Award winners this year include Edinburgh Food Studio, Eusebi Deli and The Outsider’s Malcolm Innes
The 23rd edition of The List Eating and Drinking Guide is out this week, available to buy from Wed 20 Apr. Nearly 1000 eating and drinking venues across Edinburgh and Glasgow have been covered by a team of 80+ locally-based reviewers, who chart the ever-changing scene in both cities. Revealed below are the winners of the Newcomer of the Year and New Bar of the Year awards.
Our Newcomer of the Year award is presented to a restaurant opened in Edinburgh or Glasgow in the last 12 months, chosen by our experienced team of reviewers and editors for quality, inspiration and originality brought to the local eating and drinking scene.
Edinburgh’s Newcomer of the Year winners are:
Edinburgh Food Studio: for a deep engagement with our food and food culture. While a game-changer, The Edinburgh Food Studio isn’t a restaurant, although it does offer a locally-sourced fixed-price, fixed-choice menu. It’s an idea: a space for sharing, cooking, learning and eating, dedicated to events, tastings and research into traditional cooking.
El Cartel Casera Mexicana: for energy, enthusiasm and sheer good fun. Not subtle, but definitely fabulous, El Cartel Casera Mexicana has reinvented Mexican street food for the people of Edinburgh. Served up in a glamorous Day of the Dead den, their motto is: ‘long live tacos, tequila and hip hop’.
Glasgow’s Newcomer of the Year winners are:
Eusebi Deli: for bringing passion, heritage and dedication to Italian dining. Although the family has been serving up Italian food for three generations, Eusebi Deli is a delight eight years in the making. Good things come to those who wait, and owner Giovanna Eusebi has provided Glasgow with a lively and joyful place to while away the hours, sharing in the love of good food.
111 By Nico: for inventive, affordable and socially-conscious fine dining. Nico Simeone has stamped his name on Glasgow’s West End fringes, firstly with La Famiglia (which became Simply Fish) and now with 111 by Nico. A blend of high-end dining plus an academy element, the restaurant helps disadvantaged youngsters find their cooking talent. The food is inventive, exciting and keenly-priced.
The New Bar of the Year award pays homage to the city’s hottest new drinking spots, alongside their focus on good food, a welcoming atmosphere and contribution to the neighbourhood.
Edinburgh’s New Bar of the Year award winner is:
Smith & Gertrude: for its reinvention of the wine bar. The Stockbridge-based wine bar breathes new life into an 80s-stereotyped concept. Offering a carefully-curated wine list to accompany sharing boards that perfectly compliment what’s in the glass, Smith & Gertrude is pared-back, straightforward and punching above its weight.
Glasgow’s New Bar of the Year award winner is:
six°north: for blending Belgian tastes with Scottish brewing. Named after the fact they’re based on a latitude six degrees north of Brussels, their Belgian influences are on their sleeves. six°north boast 30 taps showcasing their wares and other Scottish beers, plus small plates of enticing food to bring a flavour of Belgique to their Partick neighbourhood.
This year’s Special Award goes to Malcolm Innes, founder of The Outsider, Ting Thai Caravan, and new venture WildManWood Pizza for his obsessive attention to detail, his forward thinking and an unpredictability that keeps Edinburgh’s dining scene consistently on its toes.
The 23rd edition of The List Eating and Drinking Guide is out on Wed 20 Apr.
