Once upon a time you brandished a glow stick and raved with unabandon into the small hours. Now you're a parent you're probably awake at that time because someone is crying, and not because they had too much tequila. If you miss the light displays and good tunes then check out a family rave. Companies across the country are combining top DJs and licensed bars with child-friendly activities at a decent daytime hour so the whole family can bust some shapes at the club. After all, the family that raves together, stays together.

Big Fish Little Fish – BFLF kicked off in 2013 as a monthly party in Brixton and has since expanded to host events in Manchester, Exeter and Nottingham, with launches happening in Edinburgh (12 Mar) and Glasgow (29 May) this spring. Big Fish Little Fish family raves offer a multisensory dance floor complete with glitter cannons and bubble machines (a step up from the usual sticky club floor) and top DJs playing club classics and upfront dance music. Past Djs include DJ Food, Mixmaster Morris, Hatcha and Readers Wives. Each event has its own fancy dress theme as well as a play area of tunnels and inflatables, chill-out zone, face painting, craft tables and a licensed bar (for the grown-ups). They strive to keep each event unique with surprise elements including hula-hoop demonstrations, synthesiser workshops and interactive light installations.

Ickle Bambino Baby Raves – A monthly rave in Portsmouth with local DJs getting out of bed early to spin house, hiphop, indie, electro and trance for you and your under 7s. If they tire of dancing there's also an activity zone, face painting and a fancy dress booth. It's the toddler equivalent of going to the bar when a track you don't know comes on. There's a licensed bar for adults, free squash for kids and the venue is breastfeeding friendly. Don't want anyone getting dehydrated on the dance floor.

Baby Loves Disco – This daytime dance party for parents with children under 6 arrived in the UK from the States in 2007. Taking place in genuine nightclubs Baby Loves Disco sees real club DJs mixing retro floor fillers from the 70s, 80s, 90s and naughties with the latest pop tunes. Face painting, play tents, bubbles, balloons, crafts and dance floor games will keep wee ones busy all afternoon while the 'rents can kick back with a cocktail. If your kid becomes a seasoned clubber and doesn't want to wait until their 18th birthday to get back on the dance floor Baby Loves Disco runs a Pop Lock-In for ages 4–11. DJs spin only the most recent chart tunes and there's instructors in street dance and breakdance to get them busting some superior shapes. Away from the dance floor they can indulge in karaoke, transfer tattoos and neon hair streaking, maybe don't take them to Grannies afterward. Events take place in Edinburgh, London, Tonbridge, Glasgow and York.

Mini Ravers – In Sheffield Mini Ravers provides an opportunity for preschoolers to explore rhythm and movement to the songs you used to party too. A good way to get them to appreciate some proper tunes, rather than Justin Bieber. There's colourful light shows, sensory activities and dance sessions with a qualified instructor to get everyone boogying along.

BOOMCHIKKABOOM – Previously Baby Rave North BOOMCHIKKABOOM host family raves across the north of England in venues including super club Control. There's music, soft play, pom poms, instruments, parachute fun and plenty of bubbles. The bigger events also have live music, photo booths, inflatables and stalls from local businesses. Raves are aimed at ages up to 5, with older siblings welcome.
